In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the University's founding in 1853, Washington University has published a new history book, Beginning a Great Work: Washington University in St. Louis, 1853—2003, written by Candace O'Connor. Candace O'Connor is an award-winning writer, editor, and documentary producer. She has written extensively for regional and national magazines and newspapers, as well as for corporations and health-care institutions. The founding editor-in-chief of Missouri Historical Society Press, she has edited, substantially revised, and co-authored a number of books. Her historical documentary, Oh Freedom After While: The Missouri Sharecropper Protest of 1939, which aired nationally on PBS, won a regional Emmy award.
