City of Saint Louis
Proclamation

Whereas, on September 14, 2003, Washington University begins the Sesquicentennial celebration of the University's founding in 1853; and

Whereas, for one hundred and fifty years, Washington University has been educating independent and creative men and women whose scholarship and commitment to service has had an indelible impact on this community; and

Whereas, Washington University alumni include twenty-one Nobel Laureates, government leaders, medical research pioneers and literary and artistic masters; and

Whereas, seventeen of the Nobel Laureates have been associated with the medical school which is recognized throughout the world for its outstanding research capability and its dedication to improving the quality of human life; and

Whereas, Washington University is a preeminent St. Louis institution which has greatly contributed to the growth and development of the St. Louis community for one hundred and fifty years; and

Whereas, the City of St. Louis extends congratulations to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton, the administrators, faculty, and staff on the 150th Anniversary of Washington University as well as thanks and appreciation for providing high quality education in St. Louis.

Now, therefore, I, Francis G. Slay, Mayor of the City of St. Louis, do hereby proclaim September 14, 2003 as

"Washington University Day"
in the City of St. Louis
