Whereas, an exceptionally well-regarded institution at the local, state, national, and international levels of recognition, Washington University has attained distinction for an ongoing record of educational service which extends one hundred fifty years into the past; and Whereas, founded in 1853, Washington University will observe its Sesquicentennial Anniversary with a variety of special events which will take place during Founders Week, September 14 through September 20, 2003; and Whereas, after starting the anniversary celebration with a 150th Birthday Party on Sunday, the week will be filled with such occasions as a "Remembering 1853" lecture on the country of China, a Brookings Quadrangle concert by the Saint Louis Symphony, an inaugural address by New York Times columnist and best-selling author Thomas Friedman for the Assembly Series, Graduate School of Engineering reunions, an Eliot Society Seminar Series preview entitled "The Challenges of Globalization," and a multitude of gatherings by returning alumni, parents, and friends of Washington University all day on Friday and Saturday; and Whereas, Saturday's Founders Day gala dinner will culminate the week's festivities with a long-anticipated sesquicentennial video and keynote address; and Whereas, in keeping with tradition, Founders Day will also include presentation of Distinguished Faculty Awards, Distinguished Alumni Awards, and the Board of Trustees Robert S. Brookings Award, which is given to an individual exemplifying the alliance between Washington University and its community: Now, therefore, be it resolved that we, the members of the Missouri House of Representatives, Ninety-second General Assembly, join unanimously to applaud the stellar history, impressive academic credentials, and outstanding programs associated with Washington University and to convey to all of those involved this legislative body's heartiest congratulations and best wishes for unparalleled success in observing the One Hundred Fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of what is universally known as one of Missouri's most treasured educational institutions; and Be it further resolved that the Chief Clerk of the Missouri House of Representatives be instructed to prepare a properly inscribed copy of this resolution in honor of the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the founding of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
